Cyrus Chinoy’s Tournament Review
PADDLING WITHOUT ANY WATER!
The National Paddleball Association (NPA) presented the 2025 Midwest Doubles Paddleball tournament this weekend. The host of the tournament this year was the beautiful and long standing Davison Athletic Club.
Thank you to the NPA and tournament director Jim Price in organizing and coordinating this event every year. Jim did a great job in communicating to players about the tournament and running it in conjunction and help of the other Jim, namely Jim Owens.
This year’s edition included players of various skill levels and ages and included the highest level of fair and competitive play. This year was no different and players battled on the courts all day long. Even though everyone wants to win, every player showed grace, honesty and integrity during their matches and would make a call against themselves if they did not hit a winning shot to the front wall. Many of the things that make this sport great…honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.
Players from all over Michigan and parts of Wisconsin competed in multiple divisions in this round robin event trying to capture division wins.
I was honored to compete in the Open division with my brother Kelvin Hatcher Jr as we battled each and every match with some high level Paddleball players. We had some close games and not so close games, but we hustled for every shot and always maintained our competitive nature, like all the other players. Thank you to all the players in our division namely Don Cheridee McIntyre, Sunny Kukreja, Dennis Dinauer, Al Harris, Ben DeGroot and Tyler Tate. Even though we ended up in 3rd place, we had great games against all of them and appreciated all of their great play and camaraderie on and off the court. Congrats to Don and Sunny as they played great all day and earned the Open division championship. Great job fellas.
Thank you Kelvin for all your great hustle, play, grit and determination all day long. Always love being able to battle on the court with you my brother. Appreciate you.
In my other division, I was honored to compete with another brother of mine Brandon Twopoint-o in the 70+ division. This division was also stacked with many skilled players. Brandon and I played some teams that Kelvin and I had already played in our Open division and I already knew they would be challenging games, but we’re always up for a challenge.
Each game went back and forth in our division and Brandon and I played well enough to get into the final match in the winner take all game. We battled against seasoned Paddleball veterans in Dennis Dinauer and Al Harris in the final match. Dennis and Al played great all day as they are true Paddleball “shooters” and certainly showed all their skill and shot selection against us in winning the 70+ division. They deserved the win and it was great to play against a great team. Congratulations gentlemen.
Brandon my brother, even though we got 2nd place, you played great in only your 2nd Paddleball tournament ever. You were hustling all day like I always know you do and you played great. Appreciate the games together as always my brother. Appreciate you. Brandon also played in the A division and him and his partner Tonya Jones played great and ended up taking 2nd place in that division as well. Great all around play by both of them.
I’m always humbled to play against so many talented players in all sports and especially in Paddleball because so many players, at various skills and at different ages are competing against you and bringing their own competitive fire to the game.
It was great to catch up with old friends again, competing with them on the courts and continuing to have great camaraderie off the courts.
Thanks to the National Paddleball Association in putting on this fun and competitive event. Always a pleasure, to get everyone together.
Peace.
