CYRUS’S POST

2024 National Paddleball ChampionshipsPaddleball was the name of the game this weekend with this year’s 2024 National Paddleball Championships held at the historic Glass Court Swim and Fitness facility located in Lombard, Illinois.Talented women and men from 4 states and even the country of Spain came to battle it out for a chance to become a National Champion in their respective divisions in this single and doubles event.First and foremost, big thanks to tournament director Ben DeGroot for organizing this fun and competitive event. Ben did a great job at making sure to welcome everyone and just make sure everyone had an overall great time. Thank you Ben for putting on the event and bringing everyone together for a fun event. I appreciate you.Matches started on Saturday in this mostly round robin tournament format. Many different skill level divisions were available and they all filled out with players from beginners, intermediate, advanced to pros. Players tried to get as many wins and points in their divisions so they could move into the Finals on Sunday. Great play all around by so many players in all divisions with athletic plays all around on every court. Speaking of “court”, the famous Glass Court at the facility saw plenty of action, specifically with many of the open/pro singles and doubles matches. My adventures led me into battle in the Age Open Doubles division with my brother Kelvin Hatcher Jr and we ended up winning 1st place. Kelvin played great and we grinded out all of our games. Always a pleasure to step on the court with you Kelvin. Shout out goes to all of your opponents namely Tyler TatePaul SplinterRaj Bhandari, Mike Czabala, Thomas Carter and George Pappas . They all played great. Also was fortunate to play with my normal “Ride or Die” partner in Howie Webb aka “Snacks” in the Men’s Double A division. We had some great games with everyone and missed making the finals by one point, but had a great time. Always a blessing to be able to step on the courts with Howie. We always battle together in multiple sports and do the best we can and give it our all. Thanks for the great play Howie. Great play by all of our opponents namely Kelvin Hatcher, Brandon Twopoint-o , Michael Voegtline, Paul Splinter, Tyler Tate, Lucky Bhandari, Doug Stein, Juan HerreraKirk Van Den Heuvel and Vijay Kollipara . Awesome playing by all.Ended up also playing Men’s Singles A and pretty much battled many of the same players in doubles. Got to the finals and ended up winning 1st place, but had to work hard in the matches to earn it. Many skilled players in that division namely Paul Splinter, Tyler Tate, Lucky Bhandari, Juan Herrera and Vijaya Kollipara. It was so great to meet a lot of new players, as well as catch up with many other friends from all over the country. Had a great time overall with good competitive fair play, sportsmanship all around and great food and drinks all weekend long. Special shout out to “Al’s” bar at the Fairfield Inn hotel. What a unique establishment. Had a blast with the Wisconsin and California crew there.National Paddleball AssociationCongratulations to all the National Champions!Peace to all.
